Explosion-proof battery locomotives are typically used in environments with a risk of explosion, such as coal mines where gases like methane are present in varying concentrations. The process of resistance speed control relies on copper contacts interacting with a drum commutator, and this contact creates friction. This friction can easily generate electrical sparks.
If the concentration of gases such as methane in the air reaches a certain level, even a small spark can trigger an explosion. Therefore, for safety reasons, resistance speed control is not an option in explosion-proof battery locomotives.
